About the Resurrection House project

Problems bring out the best in many, disaster the best in most, and devastation the best in all. The outpouring of volunteers to assist in the recovery of New Orleans from the shambles of Hurricane Katrina and the breach of the levees has been magnificent. But recovery efforts thus far pale insofar as full recovery is concerned. Months and years lie ahead in the recovery effort.

To assist in the monumental task of rebuilding for the less advantaged and elderly of every demographic in New Orleans, a turn-of-the-century era church has been utilized as a dormitory with bunk beds for the hundreds of volunteers who have indicated their intention of assisting in this massive recovery effort. The renovation includes housing space for about 70 volunteers per day.

This is called Resurrection House.

Using skilled and unskilled workers, and donated and recycled materials, our goal will be to rebuild 2 to 4 homes per month for the next 5 to 10 years, helping to rebuild single-family homes for homeowners displaced from their homes or from the city of New Orleans. The goal will be to rebuild 125 homes in the next 5 years.

After Hurricane Katrina...

Ninety thousand (90,000) housing units in the City of New Orleans need to be rebuilt or repaired. Homeowners are struggling alone in efforts to rebuild family homes. Two years after the flood that inundated 80% of the city, it is apparent that the rebuilding efforts must be supplemented by faith-based and volunteer groups - or the City of New Orleans cannot and will not rebound.
